San Antonio Apartment Living: September 2018
Welcome to this month’s edition of San Antonio Apartment Living, brought to you by Iron Horse Valley, our apartments for rent in San Antonio, TX. This month we’re bringing our residents ideas for celebrating national holidays, enjoying movies coming to theaters, and making the most of the month in other ways. Read on to learn more about these topics in today’s blog post.
September Holidays
Checkers Day — September 23rd
Checkers Day is not about the classic board game. It “commemorates the famous ‘checkers’ speech made by Richard M. Nixon in 1952 after he received an adorable Cocker Spaniel as he sought election in 1952.” On this day, we celebrate dogs in politics. Whatever your party affiliation, many of us will agree that dogs can bring a smile to anyone’s day. Celebrate with us by posting on social media with the hashtag: #NationalCheckersDay or #DogsInPoliticsDay.
Confucius Day — September 29th
On September 29th, take time to celebrate Confucius Day by opening a fortune cookie. Here is one of our favorite nearby places to find great Chinese food:
China Inn is an incredible eatery with authentic Chinese cuisine. With a variety of options to choose from, including Mu Shu Chicken and Beef Chow Mein or Chop Suey, your mouth will delight with all the different flavors. Located just 10 minutes from our apartments.

National Honey Month
Did you know that September is National Honey Month? We’re probably just as surprised as you are! To celebrate, learn more about our local beekeepers. The Honey Tree Beekeeping Service of San Antonio is a provider of locally harvested 100% raw honey that is absolutely delicious. Learn more about them by visiting their website or by clicking the link above:
“We have a small orchard, and after getting a single deep body hive last spring for pollination, we discovered the true value of having a beehive just outside. We have spent hours watching our bees, busy at work collecting pollen & raising their young. Then came the bee pest, wax moths, small hive beetles & varroa mites. After extensive research… we solved our pest problem and we are excited to share the joy of having bees.”
Book of the Month
What are you reading this month? Check out our top pick below:
Pride by Ibi Zoboi
“Zuri Benitez has pride. Brooklyn pride, family pride, and pride in her Afro-Latino roots. But pride might not be enough to save her rapidly gentrifying neighborhood from becoming unrecognizable.
“When the wealthy Darcy family moves in across the street, Zuri wants nothing to do with their two teenage sons, even as her older sister, Janae, starts to fall for the charming Ainsley. She especially can’t stand the judgmental and arrogant Darius. Yet as Zuri and Darius are forced to find common ground, their initial dislike shifts into an unexpected understanding.
“But with four wild sisters pulling her in different directions, cute boy Warren vying for her attention, and college applications hovering on the horizon, Zuri fights to find her place in Bushwick’s changing landscape, or lose it all.”
